The amazing light in the Toko bar.

Last night my girlfriends and I headed to the Hills (the Surry Hill) and visited Toko for drinks and dinner. The place was pumping when we arrived – completely full with a long wait for a table. But we were determined to wait it out and try the food we had heard so
much about.

‘Waiting it out’ wasn’t exactly a chore. We perched ourselves in the very dark and sexy bar, and settled into the wine list and bar snacks – with excellent gluten free help from a lovely waiter.

Well I was hooked after the edamame beans came out. I became even more hooked when a gluten free version of their soft shell crab came out. Beautiful.

And it kept getting better.

Seared beef, more edamame beans (spicy this time), melt in your mouth sashimi, sushi,eggplant….I could have eaten there for days.

The main dining area. It’s dark. It’s moody. You will love it.

Not that I go on them anymore – but it would be the perfect first hot date place. Dark and intimate with great tunes. The kind of place you need to lean in close to each other to be heard over the music.

But it also suits a crowd. The main dining area is made up of 3 long communal tables, smaller tables and the sushi bar and grill. The kitchen is open plan so you can check out all the action. And the timber. There is amazing joinery everywhere you look. I loved
the earthiness of the finishes.

There’s also a private dining room available for 12 – 18 guests. I would love to go there for a birthday (Ahem. Hint).

A very clever sushi maker. And he doesn’t mind if you watch.

So get thyself to the Hills and enjoy a complete culinary and sensory experience. Highly, highly recommended.
